Tevye is laying in bed thinking about how to tell his wife that Tzeitel is not marrying the rich butcher. He has a nightmare. In his dream all of their dead relatives come back to life. In his dream, the grandma tells his wife that Tzeitel is marrying the tailor. His wife was furious. The butcher's wife comes up from the grave and gets mad at Tevye and his wife because she heard them talking about Tzeitel marrying the butcher. She said that if Tzeitel married the butcher she would let her live for 3 weeks an then come to her during the night and kill her. They try to bury Tevye and his wife alive. His wife thinks that her grandma came all the way into his dream so she could tell him about the tailor. She is now okay with Tzeitel marrying the tailor and not the butcher.
There is a parade of people walking down the street with candles as the sun is going down. They were going to watch Tzeitel marry Motel. After they are married everyone begins dancing. The men balance glass bottles of alcohol on their heads and do a dance. Lazar Wolf gets up in the middle of the wedding reception and starts yelling at Tevye. He was yelling because Tevye didn't keep his promise and let Tzeitel marry him. Perchik comes to the reception and tries to get girls to dance with him. They all run away because they think it is a sin. After him, everyone grabs a partner and starts dancing. People with weapons, fire, and horses show up and crash the wedding reception. They rip up all of the gifts that Tzeitel and Motel were given and knock over a lot of tables. The peop,e start destroying the whole town. They go into all of the stores and tear up materials.
Hodel is upset because Perchik is having to leave the next day. Perchik tells Hodel he wants to talk about marriage with her. He asks her to marry him. They run into Tevye. He tells him that he has bad news because he has to leave town. But he also has good news because they are engaged. However, Tevye does not approve. Perchik says that they are not asking for his permission but that they would like to have his blessing. He finally gives them his permission and blessing. Tevye goes home to tell his wife that Hodel and Perchik are getting married. She is mad because he is not rich and no one asked her permission. To calm her down Tevye tells her that he has a rich uncle.
Hodel wants to go to Siberia to live with Perchik and help him with his work. Holdel and her father are both very upset when she leaves. Hotel finally gets his sewing machine. People from all over town come to see his new machine. Hotel and Tzeitel had a baby. Chava and Fyedka were talking. I think they want to get married. She tries telling her father that she really likes Fyedka. He says no because Fyedka is a different kind of man. Chava tells her father that she wants to get married to Fyedka. He says no.
Golde runs down the street to catch Tevye. She tells him that Chava left town with Fyedka and that the preacher said they were married. As Tevye is walking down the road, Chava runs up behind him. She begs him to accept her and Fyedka. She screams and cries behind him as he says no.
A man of higher authority comes to Tevye's house and tells him that he has to pack up all of his belongings and leave the town. As a matter of fact, the whole town must pack up and leave. They only have 3 days.
